Easy Homemade Apple Pie Filling
(Instant Pot Apple Pie Filling & Topping)
This homemade apple pie filling and topping is so easy to make, just takes a few minutes to cook and can be refrigerated upto 2 months. I use it in making mini apple pies or hand pies. This delicious apple pie filling can be used as a topping for ice creams, oatmeal or making yougurt parfaits.
Ingredients
- Gala or Honey Crisp apples - 6 medium sized
- Brown sugar - 1/2 cup (add 1/2 cup more if desired, for more sweetness)
- Ground cinnamon - 1 tablespoon
- Nutmeg - 1/4 teaspoon
- Unsalted butter - 1 tablespoon
- Salt - 1/8 teaspoon
- Tapioca or corn starch - 2 tablespoons
- Water - 1/2 cup
Cooking time*:
- For firm apple texture: Cook on high pressure for 1 minute and release excess pressure after 4 minutes.
- For softer apple texture: Cook on high pressure for 3 minute and release excess pressure after 4 minutes.

Electric Pressure Cooker Method
1. Start the sauté mode and add butter. Cancel sauté mode once the butter melts. Add the peeled and sliced apples. Add the water, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. Close the lid. Cook on high pressure for 1 minutes for firm apples or 3 minutes for softer apples. Release excess pressure after 4 minutes.
2. Remove some liquid from apples and mix the tapioca or corn starch and mix well. Add it back to the apples and mix well. The apple mixture will thicken. The apple pie filling or topping is ready to use in apple hand pies or as a topping for oatmeal or waffles
Stovetop Method
1. Heat a pan on medium heat. Add butter. Add the peeled and sliced apples. Add the water, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar. Cover and cook for 10-15 minutes until apples are fork tender. Turn off the heat.
2. Remove some liquid from apples and mix the tapioca or corn starch and mix well. Add it back to the apples and mix well. The apple mixture will thicken. The apple pie filling or topping is ready to use in apple hand pies or as a topping for oatmeal or waffles
