Vegetarian Wontons
(Steamed and Pan Fried- Potstickers)
Wontons are a type of very popular Asian dumplings. Wontons are small parcels stuffed with delicious filling and are available in many forms: steamed, pan/deep-fried or in wonton soup. This vegetarian wonton recipe is made using stir-fried vegetables and paneer(Indian cottage cheese). You can use tofu for vegan version. My family loves dumplings and I make them often. You can prepare the wontons ahead of time and freeze them and use as needed. I am sharing both steamed and pan-fried(potstickers) methods to cook wontons.
(Makes about 30 wontons)
- 3 cups Cabbage, shredded
- 1/2 cup Carrots, grated
- 1/2 cup Green onions/Scallions, sliced
- 1.5 tablespoon Ginger-garlic paste
- 1/2 cup Bell Peppers, chopped
- 1/2 cup Organic Paneer or Firm tofu, crumbled*
- Salt and pepper To taste
- 1 tablespoon Red chili sauce (Adjust to taste)
- 1 teaspoon White vinegar
- 1/2 tespoon Corn Starch
- 1 teaspoon Organic Honey or sugar
- 1 tablespoon Oil plus as required
- 1 tablespoon Organic coconut aminos/soy sauce*
- 30 Wonton wrappers
Notes: Paneer or tofu can be replaced with your choice of protein.
Step by step video recipe for Steamed and Pan-fried Wontons:
Method:
To make the vegetable and paneer/tofu filling:
1. To make the Sauce mixture:In a bowl mix together, chili sauce, coconut aminos/soy sauce,vinegar,honey and the corn starch and set aside.
2. Heat oil and add the white parts of scallions. Add the ginger-garlic and saute for 1-2 minutes. Add the peppers and carrots and cook for a minute. Mix in the cabbage and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the salt and pepper. Add the prepared sauce mixture. Turn off the heat.
3. Let the mixture cool down completely.
To Prepare the Wontons:
1. Apply water to adjacent sides of wonton wrapper, add the stuffing.
2. Fold over to form a triangle. Fold in the ends in the center.
3. Arrange the wontons on a baking sheet and cover with a kitchen towel till you prepare the rest of the wontons.
4. To make ahead and freeze the wontons: Freeze the wontons on a baking tray. Once frozen, keep them in a ziplock bag or airtight container.
Steaming Wontons In Electric Pressure Cooker/Instant Pot:
1. Add 1 cup of water to the insert and heat the water on saute mode for 5 minutes. Cancel sauté mode.
2. Arrange the prepared wontons on a greased steamer basket . You can also arrange the wontons on parchment paper. Cover the basket with a lid or foil.
3. Start the steam mode, cover with a glass lid and steam for 15 minutes (Select no pressure option).
4. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Stovetop Method:
1. Add 1 cup of water a large pot and heat the water.
2. Arrange the prepared wontons on a greased steamer basket . You can also arrange the wontons on parchment paper. Cover the basket with a lid or foil.
3.Cover with a lid and steam for 15 minutes.
4. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
Potstickers - Pan-fried Wontons
1. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a pan on medium heat.
2. Arrange the wontons in the pan.
3. Cook for 3-4 min on medium heat.
4. Turn over and add 2-3 tablespoons of water and cover.
5. Cook for 2-3 minutes on medium-low heat.
6. Serve the wontons with your favorite dipping sauce.
